Recovery isn’t just about putting the drugs down. That’s where it may start—but that’s not where the real work ends.
For me, the real battle was in my mind.
It was the beliefs I had about myself. The stories I kept repeating. The need to control everything. The fear, insecurity, resentment, and old ways of thinking that followed me long after the drugs were gone.
I came into recovery thinking drugs were my problem. Over time, I started realizing the drugs were a symptom of something much deeper.
I had to learn how to recognize the thoughts that were running my life instead of automatically obeying them. I had to question what I believed, change my perspective, and begin practicing a different way of living.
That’s why simply stopping wasn’t enough for me.
Recovery became about changing my relationship with my own mind—and learning that just because a thought shows up doesn’t mean I have to follow it.
The drugs weren’t the only thing I had to recover from.
I had to recover from the person I had learned to believe I was.
